Making an impact in fixed income markets (BNY Mellon)

Rising issuance of green and social bonds is helping to boost the impact bond sector, says Insight Investment fixed income specialist Joe Sullivan-Bissett.

As interest in responsible investment gathers pace, impact bonds are shaking off a reputation as niche products to enter mainstream fixed income markets. According to Insight Investment fixed income specialist Joe Sullivan-Bissett, the last five years have seen exponential growth in the market, predominantly driven by European issuers in specific areas such as green bonds.

Sullivan-Bissett points to the growing diversity of both impact bonds and their issuers. He also notes a marked rise in social bond issuance in 2020. A number of these issues have been designed partly to help provide Covid-19 relief through dedicated projects and funding schemes.

Looking ahead, he believes growing diversity within the market will open up, creating potential opportunities for an increasingly wide range of investors.
