Lærernes Divests From Mining Companies Over Human Rights Abuses

Share post:

According to Danish investigative press Danwatch, Lærernes Pension has decided to divest its 11 million DKK investment in the Canadian mining company Barrick Gold, following serious allegations of human rights violations at the company’s North Mara gold mine in northern Tanzania. This decision comes after reports of ongoing abuses, including a recent incident where a local individual was killed during a confrontation with the mine’s security forces.

In late November, 21 residents from the Kuria community near the North Mara mine filed a lawsuit against Barrick Gold in Ontario, Canada. They accuse the company of employing security forces that have tortured, killed, and raped locals. Barrick Gold denies these allegations and claims no control over the security forces at the mine.

Additionally, Lærernes Pension has divested 15.5 million DKK from the Swiss mining company Glencore, placing it on their exclusion list. This action follows revelations of Glencore’s involvement in human rights violations, environmental law breaches, and a 1.1 billion USD fine for bribery and market manipulation.

Meanwhile, Danish pension funds Velliv and Sampension continue to hold investments in Barrick Gold, stating that they are conducting ongoing assessments and dialogues with the company regarding the allegations.
