Asking difficult questions in person

My wish for inspiration has been fulfilled by the conference. From biodiversity to AI, we’ve covered most of the innovative topics within sustainability. I’m also comforted by some of the good news we’ve heard, such as China’s emissions having started to decrease. One thing that I might have wanted to hear more about is human rights. The conference started on the topic of the just transition, which is highly relevant and we heard about geopolitical tensions. But the human rights issues haven’t been addressed enough in that context. Of course, these are highly sensitive issues and it may not be appropriate to address them on stage at such an international gathering. The need to ask difficult questions brings to the forefront the very purpose of meeting in person: in a politically divided world, it is more significant than ever to create bonds across borders with people we don’t have the occasion to meet otherwise.
