Doctors’ Pension Pushes for Climate Action

Share post:

Stockholm (NordSIP) – Lægernes Pension is strengthening its climate-focused initiatives by actively engaging with the world’s largest banks and major CO2-emitting companies. As part of the strategy of the Danish Doctors’ Pension fund, they collaborate with other climate-conscious investors to drive corporate sustainability and environmental accountability. The fund’s ultimate aim is to ensure companies align with global climate goals and limit temperature increases to a maximum of 1.5°C.

The organisation’s approach centers on active ownership, which includes voting at general assemblies and maintaining direct dialogue with companies in carbon-intensive sectors. In 2023 alone, Lægernes Pension participated in over 870 votes related to climate issues, actively using their influence to encourage better practices. Additionally, the pension’s policies allows to divest from companies failing to meet sustainability benchmarks.

An important part of this effort is supported by “Læger For Klimatet” (Doctors for Climate), a group that represents pension members who advocate for ambitious climate action. This group, composed of 125 delegates, emphasises the need for strong and clear signals to companies about sustainability expectations.

“There is no doubt about our focus. It is very clear that we are committed to this goal. It is a positive step that Lægernes Pension is sending strong and clear signals at general assemblies about what is expected globally,” Maartin Schønemann-Lund, a representative of Læger For Klimatet, highlighted in a recent magazine published by Lægernes Penion & Bank.

Between January and August 2024, Lægernes Pension cast 910 votes, 870 of which were tied to climate-related issues, with 40 votes targeting some of the largest polluting companies such as Volkswagen and Toyota.
